*** TAX EXTENSION TIME FOR 2012 ***

It's tax time again and it's important to complete your 2011 tax returns for submission to the IRS or to submit a tax extension. Here is the latest information on extensions from the IRS:

Latest IRS Deadline & Filing Information

Get an Additional 6 months (extension) to complete and file your return. Equivalent to tax extension forms 4868 and 7004.

The IRS states there are three ways you can request an automatic extension of time to file a U.S. individual income tax return:

  • (1) You can electronically file Form 4868 which is an application For Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Tax Return
  • (2) You can pay all or part of your estimate of income tax due using a credit or debit card
  • (3) You can file a paper Form 4868 by mail

NB: Note that an extension of time to file is NOT an extension of time to pay and you should pay your IRS obligations when filing an extension.

The key tasks before organising your 2011 tax extension are to write down your expenses and income as closely and detailed as possible. You don't want to understate your income as that would potentially mean an underpayment of tax liabilities.

You can submit your own extension for free by completing the forms or use one of many service providers for as low as $9.95.
